Senior Associate in charge of citizens' engagement and cultural change / Türkiye

The European Climate Foundation (ECF) is a major philanthropic initiative working to help tackle the climate crisis by fostering the development of a net-zero emission society at the national, European and global level.

We support over 1000 partner organisations to carry out activities that drive urgent and ambitious policy in support of the objectives of the Paris Agreement, contribute to the public debate on climate action and help deliver a socially responsible transition to a net-zero economy and sustainable society in Europe and around the world.

ECF is currently accepting applications for a "Citizens' engagement and cultural change" Senior associate in Türkiye. Within the ECF Türkiye team and as part of a wider European team of citizens' engagement experts, the successful candidate is expected to drive, together with another Senior associate, the communication, public opinion and culture related activities of the ECF in Türkiye.

The main objective of ECF's work in Türkiye is to enable the attainment of the 2053 Net Zero Emission target. The ideal candidate would possess a strong aptitude for strategy development and implementation in a rapidly changing landscape, with a focus on communications skills.

The postholder needs to have a sound understanding of the media landscape in Türkiye and ideally good relations and existing contacts within a diverse range of media. An interest in other communications tools (social media, advertising...) would be a plus.

Collaboration with partners, stakeholders and colleagues from diverse backgrounds is central to the success of the programme. Therefore, the role requires strong facilitation, networking and constituency building skills.

The role offers a unique opportunity for an individual with a sincere interest in tackling climate change to work with a talented team and a pool of remarkable partners and play an active role in helping speed up the net-zero transition in Türkiye. Expert level knowledge of thematic issues such as climate change, energy, electricity and industrial decarbonization is not necessary but would be considered an asset.

The chosen candidate will report to the ECF Country Director for Türkiye.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Strategy development and implementation:
    • Co-developing a holistic net-zero transition and climate change communications strategy to shape the debate in Türkiye, considering the country's social, economic and political context.
    • Contributing to the development and review of the ECF strategy in Türkiye to address the key segments of the population needed to broaden societal support for the net-zero target and climate action through strategic partnerships with organizations, media and popular culture stakeholders.
    • Collaborating with ECF programmes -with particular focus on clean power, fossil-free energy and industry- to ensure strategic communications is integrated into ECF's grant-making in the country
    • Collaborating with the ECF's portfolio of grantees and partners to deliver the materials, stories, voices and messaging.
    • Identifying, planning and occasionally coordinating key communications campaigns, initiatives and activities to build narratives that promote net-zero transition and climate action, targeting key audiences and leveraging influential actors and constituencies.
    • Monitoring, evaluation and reporting on strategic communications work.
  2. Grant-making and grant management:
    • Soliciting and validating proposals from potential and existing grantees; drafting selection recommendations for board / donors' consideration.
    • Providing guidance and insight to communication strategies of partners.
    • Developing communications initiatives through partnerships and grant-making, from time-bound projects to long-term infrastructure building.
    • Contributing to the campaigning, organising and digital engagement strands of the programme.
  3. Networking:
    • Building and maintaining trusted relationships with key media, experts or influencers with a view to proactively engage them in the net-zero-carbon economy debate.
    • Working hand-in-hand with an international network of communications experts, who seek to advance the momentum of the net zero transition.
Requirements:
  1. A genuine interest in, and commitment to, the mission and values of the organisation.
  2. At least 5 years' experience in communications through the lens of climate, energy, industry, public affairs, journalism or a related field.
  3. Clear strategic understanding of the relationship between public opinion, campaigns and communication.
  4. Familiarity with the Turkish media landscape (existing media contacts desirable).
  5. Strong diplomatic skills and interpersonal relations, ability to quickly build trust with partners, stakeholders and colleagues from diverse backgrounds and institutions.
  6. Confidence to work directly with high profile individuals and partners from diverse backgrounds at all levels.
  7. A strong understanding of the processes and dynamics of policymaking and politics in Türkiye.
  8. Positive, can-do attitude, and flexible, learning mindset.
  9. Excellent command of Turkish and English (both written and spoken), knowledge of other languages welcome.
  10. Experience developing culture hacking ideas and implementing multi-country communications projects.
  11. Detailed understanding of the challenging media landscape in Türkiye, and experience on strategic story placement, messaging, etc.
  12. Expertise in key topic areas, including climate change, electricity, energy and steel sectors.
  13. Project and budget management experience.
